Celebrating 10 years of blog writing

I am currently celebrating 10 years of blog writing. I started writing it in early 2015 when I created the Beyond Stage Fright video interview series, and I can’t quite believe that after well over a hundred blogs - originally newsletters - I’m still here some 10 years down the line.

What would you like to read about?

Sometimes when I write them, I wonder who receives them and whether the topics I write about hit the spot or not, so given that you’re reading this now, I’d love your feedback. What do you like reading about? What have been the highlights of these blogs? What do you like less? And what would you like more of? I have so appreciated the times when I have replies, so do let me know.

Working in Liverpool

I have just spent a few days working in Liverpool, a city I barely know and am really getting to like. I gave my talk and masterclass to musicians from the Liverpool Phil Youth Orchestra and Youth Choir. As ever, it was a joy to see the musicians shed their limiting nervousness and with a few strategies and tips, come into their own as musicians, playing and singing with far greater confidence. It always takes me aback at how relatively simple it is to find this place of performing freedom and yet how rarely this is part of what we experience in the musical world, whether in music education or in the music profession at large.

Young violinist in orchestra

I am so pleased to be doing more of this work. Covid knocked a whole chunk of it on its head and it’s taken time to get it moving again. In March, I will be going to Luxembourg to do the same for one, possibly two, of the conservatoires out there. I will also be on the jury of a piano competition which will be an interesting experience.
